Short Bio - Ron Thaxton
Pastor Ron Thaxton is a life-long resident of West Virginia. He is a graduate of Nitro High School and West State College. He and his wife, Nancy, were married in 1970 and are the parents of Charessa and Amber–and the grandparents of Stormie (3yrs) and Starr Parker (1 1/2yrs).
Their ministry together began with involvement in a chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ at WVSC with a trip to Explo ‘72 in Dallas, TX. This experience opened their eyes to the larger Body of Christ. They served as Senior High Youth Leaders in their local church and began a Home Bible Study Group in 1973 which grew into Jesus Christ Unlimited Ministries, Inc which was organized in 1976 for a bi-centennial celebration on the State Capitol lawn called “Spirit in ‘76!” Subsequent to this event they continued with the Bible Study Group while expanding into Street Ministry and Contemporary Christian Music Concert promotions.
In 1982 they stepped into full time pastoral ministry as it became obvious that there was a group of people who were looking to them for pastoral support. In 1986 the church affiliated with the Association of Vineyard Churches under John Wimber as Vineyard In The Hills.
God had put a burden on their hearts in the 1970's for the unity of the Body of Christ as they examined the Scriptures and saw that the New Testament addressed a CityWide Church. In 1998 they stepped away from the hands-on pastoral ministry of the local church to give themselves completely to the reconciliation of the Body of Christ. This has centered primarily on Pastors’ Prayer Fellowships–pastors praying together for one another, their local churches and communities crossing denominational, racial, gender and generational lines. This ministry is known as The Church in the City.
Pastor Ron became a member of the Charleston Black Ministerial Alliance in 1995 and currently serves on its Executive Board as Secretary. He was also appointed by Mission America to serve as their Appalachian Representative. In 2001 he and Nancy agreed to help facilitate the objectives of the United State Strategic Prayer Network for the state of West Virginia. The ministry to assist in the coordination of prayer efforts throughout the state is known as PrayWestVirginia. The vision is to see centers of prayer established and recognized in every county in the state so that the words of our state song might find fulfillment: “Oh those West Virginia hills, how majestic and how grand, with their summits bathed in Glory just like our Prince Immanuel’s land!”
